Furniture Buying Guide

Furniture Buying Guide

Getting new furniture is a big deal, but that doesn’t mean it has to be a hassle. Here at Homescapes, we are committed to giving our customers high quality furniture that looks good, performs brilliantly and sees you through modern life.

Our Furniture Philosophy
We have over twenty years’ experience of producing furniture so we like to think we know our stuff. We believe that there are four aspects to building great products that will last:

Design The beauty of having our own factories is that we can wake up in the middle of the night with an idea and have it made and delivered in a matter of weeks. Between our UK and Indian creative teams, we work hard to create furniture that is both timeless yet stylish, looking at future trends and, most importantly, what our customers need.

Materials You won’t find veneer in a Homescapes product. We pride ourselves on using only 100% solid hardwood, mainly Sheesham, Mango and Acacia. This means that you’ll get hardwearing furniture that will last for years.

Craftsmanship All of our furniture is made by skilled craftspeople in Jodhpur, India. Ethical manufacture is incredibly important to us, which is why we ensure that everyone who helps make Homescapes great, wherever they are based, is happy, healthy and great at what they do.

Care We care deeply about our products, our workers and our customers, and this can be seen in the furniture that we make. After it has left us, it’s down to you to make sure it’s looked after properly. See our guide below for how to keep your furniture at its best.

Caring For Your Furniture
So, you’ve picked your furniture, it’s been delivered by our lovely delivery people and now it sits pride of place in your home. What’s next? Before you settle down with a nice hot drink resting on your brand new coffee table, there are a few things you need to look out for.

Humidity & Temperature
Changes in humidity and temperature naturally cause small movements in solid wood structures. If this continues over a long period of time, it can eventually lead to warping of the wood. In order to protect against this, we suggest that furniture should not be placed in the following environments:

  • Anywhere that is subject to excessive changes in temperature or moisture
  • Near to radiators or air conditioning units

Sunlight
Leaving solid wood furniture in direct sunlight can bleach the surface leading to uneven tones and premature dying of the wood. To reduce this effect, solid wood items should be kept out of direct sunlight.

Moving and Handling
Dragging solid wood furniture can lead to joint damage for both you and your furniture. When moving your furniture, make sure it is lifted carefully by two or more people and that the weight of the furniture is evenly distributed.

Dealing with Spillages
However careful you are, the chances are that it will happen eventually. All spillages should be mopped up using a lightly dampened cloth, moving in the direction of the grain to minimise the lasting effect on the wood.

If a solvent is spilled on the surface, be sure to blot the spillage immediately without wiping as wiping can allow the spillage to spread.

Ongoing Care
Homescapes recommend that all hardwood furniture is treated regularly with a high quality non-solvent wax to ensure they remain in peak condition for as long as possible. Regular waxing also helps to develop the colour of our furniture products leaving you with a strong finish for longer.

Cleaning should be attempted using a soft, lint free cotton cloth, dampened with water or furniture polish. Follow the grain of the wood and use a light touch. Don’t forget to rotate your cleaning cloth frequently!

Silicone products should not be used as they are prone to leaving a sticky residue on the wood surface once dried which is difficult to remove.

Precautions
Finally! You’ve found the perfect furniture, the perfect spot and the perfect cleaner. Don’t forget to protect against these easily-preventable sources of damage.

Use a coaster with drinks to avoid ring marks. Your mother probably used to tell you this all the time. She was right.
Never place a piping hot plate or dish directly onto your new furniture. Use placemats to limit heat damage. And to catch that one pea that always manages to roll off your plate.
Always use a protective pad with ballpoint pens. Sticks and stones won’t affect your table, but written words can leave lasting impressions.
Never place a candle directly onto wooden furniture. Use a holder or dish, your new sideboard will thank you.
