It is a movement that encourages everyone to take time out for themselves in this fast-paced world in which we live. However, in the past, this focus has been largely promoted towards women. Yet, it is true that the same approach to self-care should be undertaken by men also. The first step you can take is looking at how to improve your sleep.

As well as an increase in beauty products for men, 2019 will look to encourage men to focus on their health and wellbeing. One of the first places to work on is sleep. Vital to our everyday mood, concentration and productivity, working towards a better night’s sleep is a step in the right direction when it comes to male wellness this year.

Improve Your Sleep for Work

One of the easiest ways to feel more productive at work is to make sure you’re getting a full night’s sleep. Being even a little sleep deprived can result in loss of concentration and make you more likely to make errors.

A reduction in productivity means working harder to make up for lost time, which in turn results in feeling even more tired. This will cause you to burn out, and can actually make falling asleep at night more difficult, as you will be more likely to feel stressed out.

One way to combat this is to establish a sleep routine that works for you. Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day will help your body get in to a natural sleep rhythm. Making sure to eat breakfast will also improve your body clock and help you fall asleep at night.

Be Prepared for a Big Day

Got something big planned? You might get sick of everyone telling you to get a good night’s sleep the day before, but it really will help. Admittedly, this is easier said than done, as a big day ahead can cause feelings of anxiety and excitement which are not conducive of restful sleep. However, making sure to have a full night’s sleep before a big event (whether that be a pressured presentation at work, running a marathon or your wedding day), will help you to focus, feel more relaxed and be more able to enjoy it.

  1. Try and go to bed half an hour earlier than you normally would. This will allow for extra time of tossing and turning before falling asleep.
  2. Switch your phone off an hour before going to sleep. Often before a big event, you’ll have lots of messages from friends popping up as a constant reminder. This will inevitably create more anxiety and stress. Turning your phone off will help you to stay calm and ensure your brain isn’t too active before bed.
  3. Read a book. If you plan to go to sleep earlier than normal, reading a couple chapters of a book will help to tire you out and relax you for a good night’s sleep.
  4. Give aromatherapy pillows a go such as lavender and chamomile. Both of these scents are proven to calm your mind and settle nervous or anxious feelings.

Make Your Bed Inviting

There are many different tips and tricks on how to improve your sleep. But one of the most important things you can do is to make your bedroom inviting. It needs to be a space that is devoted to relaxation and calmness. Keeping your room tidy and clean will help you to relax come bedtime. Try to avoid using your bedroom for working or eating, as it should solely be a place for sleeping.

Creating a bed that looks inviting will encourage you to get to sleep faster. Plain bedding is incredibly easy to style and doesn’t have to be boring. Not only should you work on the look of your bed, but it should also feel incredibly comfortable.

Make sure you’re using 100% Egyptian cotton sheets, as men are more prone to sweat and overheat in the night. Egyptian cotton is super breathable so it’ll stop you feeling overheated as you sleep.

If your mattress is a little uncomfortable but you don’t want to fork out on a brand new one, invest in a comfortable mattress topper instead. Go for a luxury feather mattress topper to breathe new life into your bed and make it super comfortable.

Finally, make sure you are getting the support you need from your pillows. An uncomfortable pillow will result in your sleep getting disturbed in the night.
