5 factors to consider when choosing the right pillow

Improve your sleep with Homescapes pillow guide

The quest for finding the right pillow can be a long and winding road filled with broken promises and one rough night’s sleep after another.  Instead of laying back and counting sheep you find yourself counting the hours until you need to be up again – leading to a sleepy, yawn filled day.

With the average adult sleeping 7 1/2 hours sleep a night, clocking up an average of 2,737 hours every year, sleep is an important and time consuming part of our lives, and, just like and a car needs an MOT, requires the correct equipment and maintenance so that we can function properly.

So now you need to ask yourself the questions – is my pillow really working for me?

1. Sleeping style – front, back or side

Everyone sleeps differently but you will usually fit into one of three categories – front, back or on your side.  There is an ideal pillow for all positions which is designed to give you maximum comfort and to support you in the best possible way.  For back sleepers a firm, memory foam pillow is recommended – this will provide shoulder and neck support.  For those who like to sleep on their front a softer pillow may be better.  And for the majority of people, who favour a side sleep, a medium thickness pillow will help to support you throughout the night.

2. Comfort

Being comfortable when sleeping is the main factor in getting a good night’s sleep.  being able to relax in your bedroom is one thing but actually being comfortable in your bed and laying on a comfortable pillow will help ensure a restful night’s sleep.  Whether your pillow is soft and filled with Microfibre or firm and filled with duck feathers – it all depends on what you prefer and what helps you relax and feel the most comfortable.  Pillows are available with different fillings, from soft to sturdy and supporting memory foam – it’s up to you to decide which you prefer.

3. Firmness -soft, medium or firm

The softness (or firmness)  of a pillow is all down to personal preference, when thinking about your next pillow purchase ask yourself which you prefer, try out different styles until you make a firm decision.

And remember to take into consideration any sleeping issue that you have which may influence your decision.

4. Sleeping issues

There are many pillows available which can help with specific conditions which may interfere with getting a good night’s sleep.

A popular health issue such as allergies can be easily combated with the use of anti-allergen materials and fillers.  These relatively inexpensive solutions mean that you can have a good night’s sleep without worrying.

Other common conditions such as snoring, sleep apnoea back and neck pain can be helped by using a good supportive pillow which can help open your airways and support your neck – allowing you to breathe easier and keep comfortable.

5. Cost

What you are willing to pay for a pillow is normally a key deciding factor when shopping and with pillows ranging from £5 to £150 there is a lot of choice and options available.  Buying a quality pillow doesn’t have to cost you the earth, take for instance Homescapes pair of luxury hotel quality pillows with anti-allergen and soft-bounce back properties for only £19.99 (sold as a pair), the orthopaedic comfort memory foam pillow for only £12.99 (back sleepers take note!) or if it’s duck feather that you’re after there’s Homescapes white duck feather pillows for only £16.99 (sold as a pair).

    • Hello John,
Thanks for your comment! It really depends on your pillow. If you have a pillow that you can wash in your washing machine then a good quality pillow can last years. If you’re looking for a pillow that does not become flat over time, we recommend our Super Microfibre Pillows however it is always important to remember to shake pillows regularly to ensure they stay nice and full.
