Children have ever-changing interests and fascinations: from superheroes to Pokémon Go and now TikTok dances. For parents though, it can sometimes be hard to keep up or find inspiration. So in order to simplify things a bit, let’s take a look at how bedroom themes might evolve as your child gets older.

Disclaimer: remember that every child has different interests. So, if you or your 16-year-old son still watch Paw Patrol, decorate accordingly!

Babies: Cosy and calming

Especially good for babies, natural tones are immediately relaxing and are proven to aid with sleep. What’s more, these hues always complement neutral wall colours like white, cream and beige so if your wall colour is along those lines, the re-decorating job is just a question of adding some cosy accessories.  Here, the bedroom is so comfy that the dog came and snuggled up before the baby could! Our grey throw and linen-coloured pouffe complement the soft cloud wall piece and warm lighting to create a peaceful ambience. To keep the space clutter-free (toys are often the biggest culprit with babies) whilst keeping with the natural tones, try our Natural Cotton Knitted Storage Baskets.

Speaking of throws and pouffes, combining light-coloured throws and cushions is also an easy way to enhance your baby’s bedroom at a fraction of the price. Of course, we can’t miss the practical elements of keeping them warm and comfortable too!

You might not be able to get enough of seeing your baby wrapped up in rosy pink colours, which is totally understandable. For lovers of pink, this soft organic cotton waffle baby blanket comes in various sizes. Pair with our pink hearts cushion cover for an adorable look. If your little one grows out of pink, you can easily update your cushions with new cushion covers in a variety of colours and patterns. If you’d like more pink still, our range of curtains includes polka dot pink to match with the other accessories!

If your child is anywhere around the ages of three to twelve, they might have a few favourite superheroes (although it’s hard to put an age limit on that, we all love Robert Downey Jr). Although it can be easily dismissed as another childhood stage, idolising superheroes can actually have a number of benefits for your children.

Many child psychologists think that superhero play is attractive to four and five-year-olds because it’s an age when they are trying to find their place in the world and assert themselves in it. Being able to imagine they are superheroes allows a pretend level of power and independence that doesn’t exist in real life, where they are managed by teachers and parents. A study from Cornell University even found that children start to make healthier food choices when they think about what their favourite superhero might eat!

So, what better way to encourage their love for superheroes than bedroom décor?

Super Luxurious Linen

Big brands such as Marvel and DC rule the superhero roost. There’s official merchandise everywhere you look, from printed bedspreads that children often grow out of, to wallpapers, figurines… the list continues. So when decorating your child’s bedroom as a tribute to Spiderman, Marvel might naturally be your first port of call. Yet, children have a delightful way of changing their minds once you’re done decorating, so why not choose a bed linen set that can be reused?

Below are some ideas for an easier life: colour pairings for your child’s favourite hero. The lack of pattern on these rich cotton bed sets means that, alongside being able to be re-used, it prevents a pattern overload in bedrooms. These high-quality sheets, pillowcases and duvets also make for amazing Instagram moments, too!

Preteen Inspiration: Geometric Styles

As your child starts edging closer to becoming a teenager, they will often actively push away any style that remotely hints at their childhood gone past. Princesses, superheroes and pirates should all be out of sight as they enter the teenage realm (according to them). Geometric patterns are ideal for bedroom décor at this stage because it allows for a mature upgrade whilst maintaining the fun of a childhood bedroom! The Homescapes range includes geometric pouffes, rugs, throws and even towels!

You might want to add a pop of colourful sophistication to the bedroom with our range of geometric hand-knitted pouffes. These bright footstools will work as an occasional seat for when they have friends over.

Our black & white cotton mandala-printed round rug adds a bohemian touch to an otherwise rather simple bedroom, and it also complements fairy lights and houseplants very well (they’re all the rage these days).

Final thoughts

You are now ready to dive into revamping your child’s bedroom into the space of their dreams. Remember though, this is just a rough guide so make sure that you tailor your child’s bedroom to their specific tastes.
