Business without Morality will destroy us – Mahatma Gandhi

Today is the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, fondly known as Bapu (father) in India. Homescapes also turned 18 a couple of weeks ago. So time to reflect on this very important quote from Mahatma Gandhi.

How true all of the above has been proved time and again, each one of the gems if thought upon is a wealth of knowledge from which we as individuals or collectively as a society, nation or humanity can draw so much. I would, however, expand only the importance of morality in business.

If morality is being true to yourself; then as an entrepreneur or a founder of a business, you would only create a business that you feel will add value to market (society). The reason for a business would not just be to make money but to provide excellence in your chosen field. In addition, to provide a product or service that would enhance the lives of its consumers. Morality would also involve doing things in a manner, which is least harmful to the environment so companies will have processes that are more efficient and will end up being more productive.

With this approach, high-quality products and good customer service would be the DNA of the organisation and will not have to be force fed to the team. Good products and service would become a part of the culture and so would be providing a fair, happy and productive work environment for the members of the staff.

Brands become great with this simple philosophy. Customer loyalty naturally comes to a brand following it. Such brands or businesses do not depend on the temporary uplift from marketing blitz but quietly keep serving their customers and society for a long time.

Today, I don’t need to give thought to immorality in business and its impact on us, we see plenty of it all around us. This is the day to introspect, as Bapu (Gandhi) would have said and see how could we contribute to make our world better for ourselves and for everyone…

At Homescapes, we try to live this principle.
