Jacquard Weave: What it is and how to use it in your home

Take a look at our readymade curtain range and you’ll probably notice the word “jacquard” popping up rather frequently. But what exactly does it mean?

What is Jacquard?

The Invention of the Jacquard Loom

The jacquard looming method was invented by Joseph Marie Jacquard in 1801, a development on the standard loom that people had been using previously. This new machine used punched cards that determined the path of the threads and therefore the pattern created within the fabric, rather than allowing the thread path to be picked by the weaver operating the loom.

The Jacquard Technique

The term jacquard refers to the weaving technique used to produce the fabric. Through all weaving methods, material is created by passing weft (horizontal) threads over and under warp (vertical) threads to build a criss-cross network of yarns. Jacquard weaving utilises this same basic technique but with a twist. By choosing a weave pattern that mixes the ratio of under and over threads, fabrics with interesting textures can be created. Materials with visual patterns can be fashioned by using different coloured threads and choosing which threads appear at the top of the design (over the threads) at certain points in a similar way.

Jacquard weaving uses pre-determined weave patterns and multiple coloured threads at once to build a beautiful, intricate design with subtle texture and a tapestry-like finish. Unlike basic weaving methods, the jacquard method of weaving means that elaborately patterned designs can be created with relative ease and pace once the initial design and preparation stages have been completed.
