Snoring can cause many arguments and frustration in relationships. But they’re not just a problem for the other half. If you snore, it might mean that you’re not getting the best quality sleep, leaving you feeling drowsy and fatigued when you wake up. As it’s National Stop Snoring Week, we wanted to give you some helpful tips and advice on how to stop snoring.

Sleeping Position

One of the first, and easiest things you can do to try to reduce or stop snoring is to change your sleeping position. Snoring is much more likely to happen when you sleep on your back. However, many people find that simply switching to their side can reduce or even stop their snoring altogether.

There are some easy tricks to help you avoid sleeping on your back. Firstly, you will need to make sure your pillows are at the right height to make side sleeping comfortable for you. You can do this by either sleeping with two pillows, or by using a pillow with a greater depth and firmness.

Now that it’s more comfortable to sleep on your side, you can try a couple tricks to help you stay in that position throughout the night. The tennis ball trick can really help with this. By placing one or two tennis balls underneath your T-shirt on your back, sleeping in this position will become uncomfortable, encouraging you to stay on your side.

Another trick is to use a body pillow that supports you while you sleep. This again can make turning onto your back difficult and uncomfortable, ensuring that you remain sleeping on your side.

Pillows to Stop Snoring

Another easy way to stop snoring or reduce the volume of your snoring is to use an Anti-Snore Pillow. Often, blocked airways are a big cause of snoring, as they cause vibrations which create the snoring volume.

With a hollow centre, anti-snoring pillows have been ergonomically designed to clear your airways. Narrow airways tend to be a common culprit when it comes to snoring, by supporting the neck and cradling the head, these pillows can really reduce snoring.

Another alternative that can help with snoring is buckwheat pillows. Food and Drink

You can also look at your lifestyle and habits to try and reduce your snoring. Avoid eating a big meal right before bed to keep snoring at a minimum. Another trigger for snoring is alcohol. Drinking booze can relax your muscles and may encourage the back of your throat to collapse as you breathe, resulting in vibrations and loud snoring.

Staying hydrated can also help. Not drinking enough water throughout the day will leave your airways dried out and full of mucus. Staying hydrated is one way to keep your airways as clear as possible.

Allergens

Finally, the source of your snoring might be allergy related. Allergies can cause your sinuses to become blocked, resulting in narrowed airways that cause you to snore.

However, switching to synthetic filled bedding or hypoallergenic duvets and pillows can keep your allergies at bay. Feather and down can irritate your sinuses if you suffer with allergies, so switching to synthetic bedding will help. It is also important to ensure your bedroom is dust free, and close windows during hay fever season.
