Take a look at our simple step-by-step guide on how to arrange sofa cushions!

As the season’s change and a new range of colours become popular, the easiest way to stay on trend in your living room is to replace your cushions. This can be a simple yet refreshing look, whilst you won’t break the bank.

Although this simple task may seem easy at first, it can be an overwhelming pressure when picking decorative products that will be seen in your home every day. We have therefore created three key steps to help guide you in the buying process.

These three simple steps can be applied to an armchair, two-seater, three-seater and corner sofa.

How to Arrange Cushions on an Armchair

  1. Size: for an armchair, go for one 45 x 45cm and one 50 x 30cm cushion.
  2. Colour: the larger cushion should be a solid colour from your scheme. Whereas the 50 x 30cm cushion can have a patterned or textured effect to add depth to your arrangement.
  3. Arrangement: place the bigger cushion at the back of the armchair, with the 50 x 30cm cushion placed in front.

To style the armchair, we’ve gone for a plain light grey square cushion at the back and added a smaller rectangular pink gingham cushion in the front. This creates a simple yet stylish look with a Vintage feel. Perfect for pink toned velvet armchairs.

How to Arrange Sofa Cushions on a 2 Seater

Generally, you will use your 2 seater sofa more often than the armchair, so it’s important not to overfill the space with too many cushions. The following cushion sizes are perfect as they are both decorative yet allow enough room on the sofa for you to sit down without having to remove any cushions first!

  1. Size: You will need two 45 x 45cm and two 50 x 30cm cushions.
  2. Colour: the same rules apply here. Pick two 45 x 45cm cushions that are a key colour in your colour scheme. Go for a subtle pattern or texture in the 50 x 30cm cushion, as there will be two of these so you don’t want to clash or go over the top.
  3. Arrangement: place both 45 x 45cm cushions alongside each other at the back of the two-seater sofa. Then place the 50 x 30cm cushions in front.

Try mixing neutral colours with pops of brighter colours. This will add life to your living room without feeling OTT. For the two seater, we’ve paired the textured dark grey Rajput cushion with the bright mustard toned yellow Nirvana cushion in front. Grey and yellow are a winning combination, or you could also try pairing grey with green for a fresh look.

How to Arrange Sofa Cushions on a 3 Seater

  1. Size: It is easy to add too many cushions to a three-seater sofa. If you use your three-seater sofa every day, we think the perfect amount is two 45 x 45cm and three 50 x 30cm cushions.
  2. Colour: Keeping with your colour scheme, go for a solid colour with both 45 x 45 cm cushions. Choose a pattern with the two rectangular cushions and then introduce a new complementary colour with your 50 x 30 cm cushion to balance it all out.
  3. Arrangement: Apply the same process as the two-seater arrangement. However, place the third 50 x 30 cm in the centre of the sofa for a symmetrical effect (see below).

With more space, you can add more patterns to your arrangement. We’ve placed the striped blue rectangular cushion in front of the plain real leather navy cushion. This is a great way to introduce patterns to your interiors without clashing. The smaller bright yellow cushion adds a pop of colour and brings the look together, creating a central focus in the middle of the sofa.

How to Arrange Sofa Cushions on a Corner

As sofa corners are much longer, it is important to use a mixture of sizes. This will divide the sofa and create symmetry. Go for three different cushion colours but be careful with adding too many patterns as this can crowd the space.

  1. Size: For a big corner sofa, go for three 45 x 45cm sizes, three 50 x 30cm and two 60 x 60cm to place in between.
  2. Colour: With the smaller square cushions and the rectangular cushions, choose 2 different plain colours. Then with your 2 bigger 60 x 60 cm cushions, choose a complementing pattern that ties in the colours of your other cushions.
  3. Arrangement: Starting from the left-hand side of the longest side of the corner sofa. Place one small square cushion with one rectangular cushion in front. Place the larger square cushion beside that and repeat the sequence to create a neat and inviting arrangement for a comfy lived-in sofa.

Finally, for the corner sofa, we’ve added larger 60 x 60 cm square cushions. By using several different sizes, you can add depth to your corner sofa. To style this, we’ve chosen a textured dark grey boucle cushion with a smaller yellow cushion in front. With the two larger cushions, we’ve chosen a grey tartan that ties the two colours together.

Another important thing to get right when it comes to arranging sofa cushions are the cushion inserts. For all the help and advice you’ll need on this, be sure to read our Cushion Pads Buying Guide.
