Feather VS Down: Which is Better?

We are often asked which is better when it comes to feather and down duvets and pillows. Widely regarded as the most luxurious choice in bedding, down duvets and pillows offer incredible comfort and a peaceful sleep experience. But are they worth the bigger price tag? And is there really a big difference between feather and down? As sleep specialists, we’re here to answer all your questions on down duvets and pillows.

What’s the difference between feather and down?

When it comes to natural duvet and pillow fillings, feather and down usually springs to mind. However, many people don’t really appreciate the difference between the two. Quite simply, feathers are probably what you picture when you think of a birds’ feather. They have a spine with fibres or hairs that span out to create the typical leaf-like shape. However, down can be thought of as coming in clusters. Spherical in shape, down clusters resemble something more akin to the head of a dandelion – think little balls of fluff.

What is a Down Pillow?

A down pillow is filled with small round clusters of fluffy duck or goose down, rather than duck or goose feathers. These are typically found under the exterior of a bird, such as the belly.

Due to their difference in structure, down and feather work differently inside a pillow or duvet. Feathers tend to line up and when under the weight of your head they create a more supportive pillow. With feather fillings, you sleep on the pillow. Whereas, because down clusters are fluffy and spherical, they tend to move away from your head as you lay on the pillow. So, you sleep in a down pillow and this is where you get that super soft cloud-like comfort.

Why should I buy down?

Down duvets and pillows are more expensive than their feather counterparts. However, you do get what you pay for. If you are looking for ultimate comfort, a luxury sleep experience, and long-lasting bedding than you really can’t get better than down.

Another difference between feather and down is the weight. Down clusters are much lighter than feathers yet they deliver the same level of warmth. Meaning that you get a comfortable lightweight duvet that drapes around you while you sleep and maintains your body temperature. Not as bulky as feather, down clusters are airy to create a lofty duvet.

Down is incredibly popular in colder climates such as Hungary and Scandinavia because it has a natural ability to insulate you. So if you are someone who feels the cold, a down duvet will offer the highest level of warmth.

Who is down suitable for?

Goose and duck-down pillows are ideal if you are looking for a super-soft, cloud-like experience when you sleep. However, if you suffer from allergies, then you might want to consider synthetic-filled or wool filled pillows and duvets.

They are also perfect for those looking to invest in a good quality pillow and duvet that will last. If you are choosing between down and feather, bear in mind that sometimes feathers can poke out of a duvet due to the quill. This does not happen with down. Down is longer lasting than feathers because down clusters are more durable than feathers.

Can you wash down pillows?

Yes, you can wash duck or goose down pillows and duvets. But it is vital to ensure that the item is completely dry before use. A damp down pillow can harbour mould and mildew. Always over compensate how long you think it would take to dry, it will require much longer in the dryer than other pillows and duvets. It’s also important to make sure that your hair is dry before sleeping on a down pillow, just prevent any moisture from getting onto your down pillow or duvet. For best care, use a pillow protector.

Sometimes feather and down bedding arrives with a slight odour. However, this smell will dissipate over a few days once the air inside has moved. However, if you start to notice an odour on your down or feather pillow after a few years have passed then you may need to consider replacing it.

Isn’t down harvesting cruel? The birds suffer if plucked when live. Or they have to be killed? Please advise how your down is harvested thanks.

    • Hello Stephen,

Thanks for your comment. I can confirm that all of our feathers/down are ethically sourced and are not plucked from live birds, but are supplied as a byproduct of the food industry. We also carry the appropriate certification (The Responsible Down Standard) which traces all feathers and down to the original source.

      I hope that helps.
      Thanks,
      Amy

The Purple Harmony Pillow is very comfortable! I like that it doesn’t seem to get too hot on warm nights and it doesn’t freeze on cold ones. It really helps me sleep – I fall asleep when I use this pillow much easier than when I don’t.
