What is a Duvet Tog Rating?

If you’ve heard of Tog ratings before, then you probably know that the higher the Tog, the warmer the duvet. The Tog rating of a duvet simply refers to how much the duvet will insulate heat and trap in air. Most duvets span from a Tog rating of 4 to 15, but how do you know which Tog rating you need?

What Tog Rating do I Need?

You might make the mistake of thinking that as Winter rolls round, you need to invest in a super thick 15 Tog duvet to keep you warm. Whilst a cover with this rating does indicate a very warm duvet, you might find that a slightly lower Tog rating would suit you better.

What's a Tog Rating?

Maintaining the right temperature throughout the night will ensure a restless sleep. Some people feel the cold more than others, but if you still find yourself overheating under a thick duvet, then a 10.5 Tog duvet should see you through even the coldest months. However, if you wake up during the night and feel cold, you could be better off investing in a 13.5 or 15 Tog rate duvet.

Which Filling is Best?

Duvets are available in two different filling types, natural or synthetic. Typically, synthetic fillings are more affordable than natural fillings, but that doesn’t mean that they compromise on comfort. All synthetic duvets are hypoallergenic and replicate the comfortable and heavy feeling of a feather duvet. Plus, they are the ideal choice for allergy sufferers, as the synthetic material is anti-allergenic.

However, you’d be wrong to think that all naturally filled duvets are bad for allergy or asthma sufferers. Some naturally filled duvets, such as wool and silk, have hypoallergenic properties which means that they are suitable for everyone. Even our feather and down duvets are encased within 100% down proof cotton to create an anti-dust mite, breathable, anti-allergenic duvet.

Simply speaking, whichever duvet filling to go for is really down to preference. Super Microfibre and Feather duvets drape around you for a comfortable and cosy night’s sleep. However, if you are someone who often finds themselves overheating at night, you might want to try a wool or silk duvet as they have a natural ability to regulate body temperature and wick away moisture.

A Duvet for All Seasons

All Seasons Duvet

To get the right level of warmth and comfort all year round, why not try an All Seasons duvet? Two duvets, one at 4.5 Tog and another at 9 Tog can be mixed and matched to create the perfect Tog rating for every season. For the warmest months in summer, use the 4.5 Tog duvet to keep you cool and comfortable. For Spring and Autumn, switch to the 9 Tog for a little extra warmth. Then when winter rolls around, you can attach the two duvets together to create a super cosy 13.5 Tog duvet.
